Again, a basset hound appears in an Oshii film. How do you interpret its presence in Avalon compared to Innocence?

The dog can be the symbol to tel us that the world that Ash has been living in is not the real world. The dog disappears in the movie after Ash prepares its food. From this we can see that possibly the dog isn’t present in reality and can be a mere program. But in innocence the dog is the escape for Batou when he returns from his intense job. The world with the dog seems more real in the sense that it connects better with our perception of a real world instead of the high-tech future world depicted in the movie. Also the dog triggers emotions in the characters. For both Ash and Batou, the dog is the only thing in the world that can make them feel relaxed and have a compassionate feeling towards.

The basset hound in the movie in Avalon is interesting because often times in the scenes the only thing that would be moving in the virtual reality. Perhaps this is to trigger some sort of response how the dogs are the same in reality as they are in the virtual reality where the AI humans are blatantly not real. However in the real world in both Innocence and Avalon the dog seems to be a source of calmness and part of the mundane life of both of the main characters. The dog in Avalon however seems to play a larger role in distinguishing the difference between reality and the virtual world. The dog seems to represent an illusion rather than reality.

In Innocence the basset hound is used in order to show the human side of Batou. The majority of the movie shows Batou as an intense cyborg who lacks most human emotions. The addition of the basset hound and how deeply Batou cares about him/her, shows that he still has human emotions and is still human in at least one way. The basset hound in Avalon plays a similar role at times. It is shown that Ash’s life is a constant dragging loop with little variation besides what happens in the game and her dog. Her dog is seen in both her real world and in Class Real. This shows that although she is apathetic towards her real life, she still has her dog keeping her grounded and returning home. Ash’s dog also seems to be a metaphor for her connections to the world and hope for the future.

In Innocence, the basset hound reveals the human side of Batou and we see this side of him when he goes back to his home and interacts with the dog. In Avalon, the basset hound seems to represent the natural and real. The only time Ash seems to display emotion or pleasure is when she interacts with and cooks food for the dog. While she herself eats dog biscuits, she cooks a delicious meal of rice and steak for the basset hound. Her only attachment to the real world seems to be her dog and the disappearance of the basset hound symbolizes her losing touch with reality. In both cases we see a more human side of the characters through each character’s interaction with the basset hound; however the basset hound seems to have a larger presence in Avalon.

The dog in Innocence acted as an anchor for Batou. In both movies, he brought up the question about his humanity frequently because he had a lot of cyborg components in him. Every interaction Batou had with his bassett hound reaffirmed the fact that there was humanity inside of him. In Avalon, the dog acted as an anchor as well, but the dog in this movie acted as a symbol for reality. There would be certain scenes where only the dog would be moving in a crowd of people. Because the game messed with the players’ minds so much, Ash’s perception of reality was warped, and the dog was the only thing in her life she really loved
