My\u00a0first book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Civilization-Monsters-Modernity-Asia-Pacific-Politics\/dp\/0822324180\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1390334094&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Civilization+and+Monsters%3A+Spirits+of+Modernity+in+Meiji+Japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Civilization and Monsters: Spirits of Modernity in Meiji Japan<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Duke UP, 1999), is a study of how traditional folk beliefs and a wider discourse on the mysterious and supernatural were reconfigured in the context of Japan\u2019s modernization to serve the consolidation of a nation-state on the one hand and to offer a platform of critique of Japan\u2019s path to modernization on the other. My\u00a0second\u00a0book serendipitously shifted from research sites in northern Japan to southern Okinawa (long story),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Beachheads-Tourism-Postwar-Okinawa-Perspectives\/dp\/144221581X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1390334126&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Beachheads%3A+War%2C+Peace%2C+and+Tourism+in+Postwar+Okinawa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Beachheads: War, Peace, and Tourism in Postwar Okinawa<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Rowman &amp; Littlefield, 2012) considers issues of tourism and war memorialization in postwar Okinawa. I&#8217;ve done\u00a0several journal articles in this area, including \u201cWaging Peace on Okinawa\u201d that was cited as Honorable Mention for Best Article in the journal\u00a0<em>Critical Asian Studies<\/em>\u00a0in 2001 and a forthcoming piece in a volume on global WWII war remembrance. I&#8217;ve\u00a0presented sections of these works over the years at many domestic and international fora of Japanese historical and cultural studies.<\/p>\n<p>I have a two other on-going projects, \u201cMultiple Exposure: Photography in Postwar Okinawa, 1945-75&#8243; which brings into conversation together for the first time the business, production, and product of Okinawan, mainland Japanese, and American photography of Okinawa and its people.
